Not Another Vampire Story

by Sakurapu

He was mouth-wateringly handsome and suave, sweet and thoughtful, every bit perfect with dark hair and grinning eyes -- but none of it fooled eighth-grade Sylvia. It didn't take a pint of blood for her to know that her sister Julia's new boyfriend Terry was a vampire...

Of course, a trail of sparkling would have helped, but there was none. Full sunlight, garlic bread and functional in all the usual boyfriend-material capacities, it was difficult to detect at first, but yes, Terry was a vampire.

Sylvia knew Julia was in deep trouble. Worse yet, Julia didn't seem to mind.

Editorial Review:

A high-ranking breakout book, Not Another Vampire Story is...another vampire story. But this one is not as typical as the rest. Sakurapu presents Sylvia, a young girl who suspects that her sister's boyfriend, Terry, is a vampire. After much suspicion and being fooled by Terry's "normal" abilities, Sylvia learns the truth and fears for her sister's life. Her sister, however, doesn't see the harm in it.

A youthful look at relationships with a little bit of fantastical excitement is just what readers need in the wake of so much vampire fiction. Sakurapu takes advantage of the wave of obsession for these beings and presents an anti-vampire story, one that will entertain readers of all ages. Quick dialog and punchy characters are the essence of this novel that pokes fun at the genre without totally letting go of it.

Not Another Vampire Story by Sakurapu introduces us to Terry, described as mouth-wateringly handsome and suave. He also manages to be sweet and thoughtful. Young Sylvia was sure, even without glitter and hair gel to make his hair oh so perfect, that her sister Julia was indeed dating a vampire. Not only was she dating the vampire, but she did not seem to mind at all that he was a vampire.

This is most certainly what I would call a Young Adult book and when you read it (if you are an adult) you should keep that in mind. With that said, it was a fun little romp that tosses in teen girls and vampires which seem to be one of the hottest things in YA books these days. Sylvia made me laugh several times and I think if I had to pick one character she would be my favorite, but all of them were enjoyable. There were a few times that the plot seemed to struggle a little bit to keep purpose but that is my only complaint. I think if you are someone who enjoys Young Adult vampire stories and a little bit of a laugh you will like this book. It is engaging, witty, and not afraid to poke a little fun here and there at its own genre (at least that’s what I took away from it). It might not be the next great American novel but it is fun entertainment and that makes it worth the read for me.
